Fail fast to succeed faster

  • Matt relates to “failing faster,” as the most important part of modern business eco-system.  In the tech world they focus on “agile development” which is the idea of doing the least amount of work on a particular item to deliver some sort of value then giving it to your customers and getting their feedback on that iteration.
  • Matt tells us how in the beginning they launched a product geared just toward communication and collaboration, but their customers wanted more.  My Case failed quickly there, and was able to pivot and go the practice management route instead.
  • The My Case team fails every day!

Tell us something good

  • Matt knew that he needed to run his criminal defense firm like a business.
  • While working at a firm early on he saw many business related things that he knew he would not want to repeat.
  • His number one piece of advice to new lawyers is “Treat it like a business!”
  • He created My Case to solve the problem of how to best communicate with clients; then enhanced My Case to build a full practice managment suite around it.
  • My Case was bought by AppFolio in 2012.

What’s on your desk?

  • Working on a documentation system for MyCase.com.  There are new document management features coming soon.

Miranda McCroskey – host of Lawpreneur Radio

100: Miranda McCroskey, Lawpreneur Radio founder and host, discusses her journey.

IMG_3022.1web (1)Lawpreneur Miranda McCroskey hung out her shingle ten years ago and formed McCroskey Legal.  She graduated Loyola Law School in Los Angeles in 1996, and spent her early years as an attorney working for the federal and local government. and as an associate in private practice.  After outgrowing and leaving her associate position in 2003, and exhausted from the job hunt, she decided that, for that day, if she could just pull in $100 she wouldn’t have to get a job.  She managed to find $100 that day, and continues to do so (plus some), ten years later – but not without the advice and counsel of many who had gone before her.

“Lawpreneur Radio” comes out of her entrepreneurial spirit, and her recognition that lawyers and successful business owners are not necessarily equivalent.  A successful colleague once told her that the lawyer entrepreneur’s, or “lawpreneur’s” business was 80% business and 20% law.  This seemingly apt statistic might not create access for an academic legal eagle to go it on their own.  Therefore, her intention is to create a community where members are both lawpreneurs who’ve figured out how to hang their shingle and thrive, and others who are wondering how or longing to take the first step or, maybe, gigantic leap.

Miranda’s hope is that young attorneys fresh out of school, older attorneys looking at self-employment as a version of retirement, exhausted Big Law attorneys with dreams of being their own boss, and any other willing listener, will tune in to be inspired, educated and entertained by the storytelling of the Lawpreneur’s journey.

Psychologists have discovered that our minds are ruled by two different systems—the rational mind and the emotional mind—that compete for control. The rational mind wants a great beach body; the emotional mind wants that Oreo cookie. The rational mind wants to change something at work; the emotional mind loves the comfort of the existing routine. This tension can doom a change effort—but if it is overcome, change can come quickly.

  • The Quest for Authenticity: The Thought of Reb Simhah Bunim Distilling the teachings and thought of Rabbi Simha Bunim, one of the foremost figures in the Przysucha school of Hasidism, this study sheds light both on what students of the Pryzsucha tradition believed as well as on its influence on Polish Hasidism at large. Pryzsucha Hasidism believed in a service to God that demanded both passion and analytical study, and sought to understand the human being, rather than God himself. This exploration of Rabbi Bunim’s thought illustrates how the spiritual leader was able to transform Przysucha Hasidism into a genuine movement and, in doing so, become the dominant personality in the Hasidic community in Poland during the early part of the 19th century.

Dumas’ epic tale of suffering and retribution, inspired by a real-life case of wrongful imprisonment, was a huge popular success when it was first serialized in the 1840s.
